Nascar Sprint Cup – Kurt Busch wins at Charlotte

Kurt Bush won his 22nd career win in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series after winning the Coca Cola 600, one of the longest, most challenging events in the actual season.

This is Kurt’s second win of the season. His first came last week in this same track after he took the All-Stars race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. He took the 1 million purse, on of the largest in the professional circuit. Kurt’s victory in Charlotte was a hard blow for the Earnhardt Ganassi Racing team. Previously, Dario Franchiti had given the Ganassi team the victory on the Indianapolis 500 in the Indycar Series. Jamie McMurray was expected to give his team the great satisfaction of winning to mayor events on one single day. But Kurt got in his way.  Kurt got out from the second spot in the starting grid. Ryan Newman had gained the Pole Position in the previous qualification runs, but couldn’t keep up with the race intense rhythm and was pushed back; he finished 9th.   This edition of the Coca Cola 600 was characterize by the very competitive spirit of the racers. There were many close persecutions, and the leader changed constantly throughout the whole race.  Lap after lap, Busch kept defending himself from the many attacks from the other competitors. The elder of the Busch brother put on a great fight and he was able to stay in control of his racecar. He drove flawlessly, and he kept his car away from the accidents behind him.   Ryan Newman had a great race. Even though he did not finish among the top racers, he sure enough had a great performance in those laps when he stayed in front of the race. After every restart, Newman was capable of moving up to the front. In a similar manner, Kurt Busch kept moving swiftly to the front of the race. The leaders kept changing positions in and out. It was very hard to determine who would be the driver to get to the finish line and win all the marbles. This competiveness kept the spectators thrilled and cheering for their favorite drivers.  Despite the constant crashes and accidents over the racetrack, non too serious, the stop and go’s did affect some of the drivers performances. One of the incidents that cought the eye was Jimmie Johnson’s crash in the 167th lap. Johnson, the Sprint Cup defending champion, lost control of his vehicle and slid backwards, hitting the safety wall. Johnson affected two other vehicles, Denny Hamlin among them, who went straight into the center of the track to avoid the collision.  As the safety-car was coming out to control the pace and take the cars out of the track, Kyle Busch, the younger of the brothers, was part of another accident. He collided with Brad Keselowski’s car when entering the pits. Both drivers suffered the consequences of the impact.  In the 273 lap, again Johnson was involved in another accident. This time around his car went straight into the wall. He came back on the 306 lap after many repairs and finished 37th.   With only 23 laps to go, Jamie McMurray, who was in front of the pack, suffered an accident. Behind him, Kurt Busch and Matt Kenseth took advantage of the crash and moved forward. When the race restarted these two where well in place to fight for the podium.  Kurt Busch kept going without too many problems and finished first. Mc Murray climbed positions and finished 2nd. Kyle Busch had a great recovery and finished third.

NASCAR Tickets – Ryan Newman Collects First Win in 77 Starts at Phoenix

Ryan Newman last landed in Victory Lane in 2008 when he won the Daytona 500, but he hasn’t seen a first-place finish with NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series since – until April 11, 2010, that is. Newman defied odds and zoomed past Jeff Gordon in a restart on Lap 377 of 378 at the Subway Fresh Fit 600 at the Phoenix International Raceway, and he took the big win after a gaping drought, perhaps signaling the winds of change for the Cup Series.

Newman trailed Kyle Busch for much of the latter part of the Phoenix race in mid-April, but a late-race caution and green-white-checkered restart allowed the Stewart Haas Racing veteran to cruise past Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson, taking control in first once Kyle Busch pitted in the last yellow. Gordon ended the race in second place, with Johnson in third, Mark Martin in fourth and Juan Pablo Montoya in fifth.

After the race, Kyle Busch offered up his congratulations to Ryan Newman, but not without proclaiming his car the fastest of the day. A leader for 113 laps of the Phoenix race, Busch and crew chief Dave Rogers made a costly mistake in a pitting gamble, with Busch summing up (as reported to NASCAR.com), “I like to win races with the best car. If we would have won, I think we could have said that. The 39 (Newman) won, congratulations to them, they deserve it, their crew chief made a great call that put them in Victory Lane. But they know that they didn’t have the best race car. They have the trophy, though.”

In the end, the trophy is all that matters – to Ryan Newman, anyway. Newman snapped a 77-race drought that will perhaps give him the momentum to go full force into the next few months, and his standings are already taking a jump. Currently (as of April 12) in 16th place in driver standings after Phoenix, Newman has had a steady but not spectacular year on the NASCAR circuit. No. 39 opened his season with an accident at Daytona, leaving him in 34th place on the day. He then had engine problems the next week at Fontana before securing an 18th place finish at Las Vegas, 16th place finish at Bristol and 4th place finish at Martinsville.

Ryan Newman has steadily been inching up ranks of the Sprint Cup circuit, and his big win at Phoenix will certainly help to sell NASCAR tickets to more races this season. The Stewart Haas Racing superstar will continue his reign as one of Sprint Cup’s elite at Texas (April 18) and Talladega (April 25) to round out the month of April in NASCAR world, and the Indiana native will be looking forward to this summer, when he goes back to his home state to partake in the Brickyard 400. Several more races await No. 39 this season, as well, and now that he’s got one win on the season anything could happen to propel Ryan Newman into the Chase.
