Jeff Gordon – Nascar’s Big Gun
Jeff Gordon is a well rounded champion counting 3 Daytona 500 wins, 4 Brickyard 400 wins and the crowning achievment, 4 Nascar Cup Series Championships. Jeff Gordon’s commitment and resolve have helped him to attain some of the highest accolades in racing . His fans expect only the best from him, and they are rewarded at every turn with Gordon’s racing agility that defines the skill of the sport.
Jeff started preparing for his career at the ripe old age of five when his stepfather altered an old fairground in his neighborhood turning it into a track on which Jeff could drive laps.Jeff’s stepdad pushed him to excel in every way and and Jeff had an incredible gift on the racetrack which was well-honed by his stepdad, John.
In practically no time Jeff’s driving ambition became apparent while he was racing quarter midgets. Jeff went on to win 35 events and set five racetrack records, all at the ripe old age of six.
Jeff later became passionate about in sprint cars because of their size and power. There was only one small problem, Jeff Gordon was 13 and according to the rules a driver had to be 16 in order to compete in sprint cars. The insurance company finally conceded and Jeff was given consent to race in All Star Florida Speedweeks. He was extraordinary driving sprint cars and the family moved to Pittsboro, Indiana so Jeff could settle and learn in the heart of sprint car country. Because of his youth and unique driving qualities, Jeff became well-known nationally while driving sprint cars. Success came easily as Jeff scored several track championships at Bloomington Speedway and a title at Eldora Speedway.
Jeff decided to attend the Buck Baker Driving school in North Carolina after discovering that there were no openings for open wheel drivers. Jeff’s introductory laps caused him to fall in love with stock cars and he made the decision at that moment to stick with them.
In 1991, Jeff Gordon went to the Busch series racing Ford Thunderbirds for Bill Davis Racing. While driving the Carolina Ford Dealers car in his first year, Jeff took home Rookie of the Year. Nestle’s Baby Ruth brand was Gordon’s sponsor in 1992 and also that year, Ray Evernham joined the team.
In 1992, the Busch series ran their first race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Jeff sat on the pole and also won the race, turning many heads in the process. This was about the time that Rick Hendrick became aware of Gordon. Jeff Gordon has gone on to become a true champion and a valued member of Rick Hendrick Motorsports.
