Thoughts about Nascar Sprint Cup Races, Drivers and Teams

Toyota moving into NASCAR

The New York Times has reported that according to an unamed source an announcement will be made on Monday (Jan 23) that Toyota will be competing in the Nascar Nextel Cup and Busch Series beginning in 2007.

No word yet as to sponsors or drivers, I imagine we will find that out on Monday. I recall there was some speculation last year about Bobby Labonte driving for Toyota. Also, Darrell Waltrip has a Toyota team in the Craftsman Truck Series, so maybe brother Michael and BDR will be running Toyotas?

As soon as I hear anything I will let you know!

Morgan Shepherd to race a full season

Morgan Shepherd and Victory Motorsports announced today that they will be racing a full Nascar Nextel Cup season in 2006. At 64, this makes Morgan Shepherd the oldest full time Nascar driver in history. The team is being backed by a group of Christian businessmen headed up by Tony and Brian Mullet from Ohio. Apparently, while they would like to win races, their main goal is “educating as many people as we can about salvation and God’s plan for them

Tony Stewart flips his car

Tony Stewart flipped his car during the opening laps of qualifying at the 20th annual Chili Bowl Midget Nationals last night. He was taken to the hospital after complaining about pain in his right arm. The doctors found nothing but put a cast on his arm until he can be examined by his own doctors on Monday. Tony said it looks worse than it is and “In no way should this affect my upcoming test at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, my plans to compete in the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona or my participation in Daytona Speedweeks.

Notes from Preseason Thunder at Daytona

  • Dale Earnhardt Jr. said that he would like to run more Busch races this year. He usually runs four or five, he said he is considering doing about ten this year.
  • Bill Elliott beat out Jimmie Johnson for the fastest test on opening day. Bill Elliot is only racing a part time schedule this year.
  • Elliott Sadler and Matt Kenseth had nothing but good things to say about the new Ford Fusion. Ford’s Performance Operations Manager says that the Fusion has the potential to be a much better racecar than the Taurus.
  • Chevrolet has led the field in all of the testing so far with Bill Elliot, Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson at the wheel.
  • Tony Stewart is off racing in the Midget Nationals’ Chili Bowl and substitute driver Mike McLaughlin is testing the No. 20 Chevrolet in his absence.
